Our Purpose
The Great Commission
" Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. "
- Matthew 28: 19-20
Church History
In 1906 a group of Christian women in the Thomas Community set their sights on an empty wooden frame building that stood near the railroad tracks on the corner of 503 5th Street Thomas, once a Methodist Church. This building and other surrounding houses belonged to Republic Steel. Equipped with vision and determination, the women appealed to Republic Steel to use the building for their prayer services. Permission was granted and the women established Mt.
Hebron Missionary Baptist Church. Mt. Hebron began under the leadership of Rev. Jackson and the membership was a combination of people from the Thomas, Acipco, Finley and East Thomas communities.
The next pastor to serve was Rev. John Rose of Montgomery, Al. Services were held
twice a month. Baptisms were done on 4*h Street Thomas in the watering pond off Florida Avenue. Due to a labor strike at Republic Steel hindering entry in the community, Rev. Thomas pastored briefly. In 1936, under the leadership of Rev. Yarbrough membership increased. After his death, Rev. Richardson pastored briefly. In 1943, a member of the congregation, Rev. James Lige, accepted his call to preach. Under his leadership, service increased to four Sundays a month. A new structure was built around the old one, new pews were purchased and a baptism pool was installed under the pulpit. Rev. Lige brought along Rev. Theodis Fisher. After Rev.
Fisher's departure, Rev. A.A. Smith continued services briefly as pastor.
Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church Thomas was incorporated in 1965, a board of trustees was established, building and structure repairs were completed. In the early 1970's, Rev A.E.
Cameron came to Mt. Hebron. Rev. Cameron implemented a building fund sealing the groundwork for a new structure. In the late 1970's, Rev. Jerry Jones was instrumental in establishing a youth department and completing the sanctuary in April 1980. From 1982-1986, Rev. James Dixon, Jr. came to Mt. Hebron. Rev. Dixon inspired the youth and women of Mt.
Hebron to take an active part in the Mission and Matron Ministry. In February 1986, God sent Rev. Tommy G. Smith. Under his leadership, Mt. Hebron was blessed to become a debt free facility.
